During the past 20 years, the focus of Harmsen‘s work have been typography, corporate- and editorial design. He worked as a creative director of MAGMA Brand Design in Karlsruhe till 2014, which was founded in 1996, and has become one of the most renowned design studios in Germany. Currently, he lives and works in Munich as a creative director at MELVILLE Brand Design, a studio he co-founded six years ago—exchanging the Black Forest for the Alps and the small town for the biggest village.
His interests in design and typography manifested in Volcano-Type. Volcano-Type is a fontlabel launched in 1996, long before web 2.0 and myfont, as an outlet for his own fonts and type designers to showcase their work. As a platform to promote Volcano-Type and push the design-discourse, SLANTED weblog was started in 2004. It soon became one of the most influential blogs related to typography in german speaking areas. A year later, the first issue of SLANTED magazine was published—countering digital acceleration. Since then, the passion for paper, books and magazines have pushed the typographic journey to 24 issues. What started as a passion-fueled project, became an independent company in July 2014. SLANTED PUBLISHERS is now operated by Julia Kahl and Lars Harmsen.
Harmsen has been a Professor of Typography and Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund since 2011 and authored numerous design and typography publications. His work has been awarded nationally and internationally. More than ever, he loves being a graphic designer.
